Every
business needs to keep accurate records. Without them you will not know
how well you are doing. You will not be able to produce your annual accounts
and any VAT returns. If that is not enough to persuade you then it is
now a legal requirement. You could be liable to a penalty of £3,000
if you fail to keep records.
If your records are poor then it takes longer to
draw up your accounts at the end of the year. This will mean increased
accountancy bills. Even though when you set up in business you have very
little spare time, you should always make time for book keeping. If you
cannot afford the time, hire someone to help you. Once they have set up
a good system you may even be able to take it overyourself once things
are more settled.
Many businesses now choose a computerised
accounting package. Used carefully they can be a Godsend. However unless
you broadly understand what they are doing then you can get into a real
mess. We have developed our own package -
WebsterAccounts - which is designed to make it quick and easy for
you to maintain your business records.
For many accounting practices this function is the core of their business.
Although it is not a core service we do offer the clients the option of
letting us help with your bookkeeping.
Occasional Help
Occasionally you may need help with clearing a backlog of bookkeeping
- especially if you have been busy. We have a bookkeeper in-house who
can help enter your transactions when required.
Helping Growing Companies
If your business is growing very quickly then you
may not be able to deal with the administration. We have significant experience
in helping such companies. For one Cambridge business we began by doing
all the bookkeeping whilst the business was still based in the University.
We also reported to the directors - as they had no Finance Director. As
they took on an administrator we trained her to follow our systems and
began to prepare monthly management accounts. They raised £6m in
funding and recruited a Finance Director who took over the reporting to
the Board. Finally they recruited an accountant in-house to deal with
all their bookkeeping and we ensured a smooth transition. We now help
with preparing reports, SMART Claims etc.
Regular Bookkeeping
For some people the thought of bookkeeping is too
depressing to contemplate. For these we can recommend a bookkeeper/accountant
who works with us on a regular basis. We are gradually expanding our list
of such people. We retain overall control of quality and prepare the final
accounts and tax computations. Click here for free Bookkeeping Advice.
